Mudflats: “Palin Throws Alaska Under the Bus.”

Sarah Palin loves Alaska!  She’s a true-blue loyalist, fighting for her folks at home!  

Or, no, it can’t be…

GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is effectively turning over questions about her record as Alaska’s governor to John McCain’s political campaign, part of an ambitious Republican strategy to limit embarrassing disclosures and carefully shape her image for voters in the rest of the country.

This is not going over well in Alaska.  I’ll use my usual caveat that there are lots of Alaskans who happily subscribe to the “Sarah right or wrong” mentality, and will continue to do so.  However, the progressive take on this whole latest mess is only slightly short of taking torches and pitchforks and surrounding the Attorney General’s office, demanding an end to the stonewalling.  I’ve watched Alaskan progressives that I personally know go from saying, “Wow! I can’t believe I voted for a Republican!” to, “She’s doing OK.  I don’t agree with everything, but I don’t regret my vote” to being so furiously seething angry they just can’t say anything.

So, loyalty flying in the face of expediency, it is quickly ripped away and used to clean the bathroom.

It remains to be seen how effective the so-called “Truth Squad” is in ‘shaping her image’ in the rest of the country, but they are not doing her any favors here at home.  I’ve never heard so many people say they can’t wait to see her new approval ratings.

We can’t wait to see them, either.

    This cannot, will not, work.

    You can’t cram for high office in a couple of weeks. This ridiculous notion that a) we should ignore the Republican running mate’s track record and b) she can be ‘coached’ into knowing her judgment on policy and international affairs in two weeks, is merely a crash course in what Bush’s presidency taught us…

    The republicans think we’re all stupid. They think a photogenic or beer friendly candidate can be foisted on the electorate, while people like Cheney pull the strings.

    Been there, done that, got the two wars and the melting down economy…

    While Palin is a genuine Manchurian Candidate (can’t you see Manchuria from Alaska?) McCain is going to explode, and then implode. Mark my words. His temper, memory and cognitive functions are problematic anyway these days. Given the pressure of the campaign, and the stalling in the polls, it won’t get better. It will get worse.

    They can try to swiftboat Obama (like we haven’t been through that already) but McCain has already taken an integrity hit because of his negative campaigning. He’s pretty boxed in there. I’m partisan, but I can also sniff something in the wind. Conceptually and morally the McCain campaign is running of fumes and even those are running out. McCain’s real character has been exposed, and any gravitas he once had has been trumped by his impulsiveness. A brief celebrity (remember McCain on Paris Hilton) his VP provides no support and is an increasing liability.

    I predict a meltdown soon. Not complacent at all, just observing.

    Meanwhile, Obama keeps his cool on the negative stuff and his passion on the economy, and fairness, healthcare and overseas wars. Biden is providing brilliant back up on these fronts. The comparisons are becoming obvious and stark
