The Associated Press is reporting that Sonia Sotomayor is Obama’s pick for the Supreme Court.
The child of Puerto Rican immigrants, Sonia Sotomayor grew up in a housing project in the Bronx. She was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at the age of eight and lost her father a year later.
She graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1976 and graduated from Yale University with her J.D. in 1979. After law school, she worked in the district attorney’s office until 1984, when she went into private practice. She was nominated to the US District Court by President Bush in 1991 and to the US Court of Appeals by President Clinton in 1997. The GOP, sensing her appeal as future Supreme Court nominee, blocked her nomination for more than a year. She was finally confirmed 67-29 in October 1998 and has served on the court ever since.
So what do you think? Good pick? Her biography seems perfect, but I don’t know anything about her judicial records. On the surface, this looks like a political grand slam!
Some prominent Republicans may not want to be the one to go up against a Hispanic nominee, but the conservative base is frothing at the mouth for a fight. What do you think?
