Reports: Sonia Sotomayor to be Obama's Supreme Court Nominee

The Associated Press is reporting that Sonia Sotomayor is Obama’s pick for the Supreme Court.

The child of Puerto Rican immigrants, Sonia Sotomayor grew up in a housing project in the Bronx.  She was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at the age of eight and lost her father a year later.

She graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1976 and graduated from Yale University with her J.D. in 1979.  After law school, she worked in the district attorney’s office until 1984, when she went into private practice.  She was nominated to the US District Court by President Bush in 1991 and to the US Court of Appeals by President Clinton in 1997.  The GOP, sensing her appeal as future Supreme Court nominee, blocked her nomination for more than a year.  She was finally confirmed 67-29 in October 1998 and has served on the court ever since.

So what do you think?  Good pick?  Her biography seems perfect, but I don’t know anything about her judicial records.  On the surface, this looks like a political grand slam!

Some prominent Republicans may not want to be the one to go up against a Hispanic nominee, but the conservative base is frothing at the mouth for a fight.  What do you think?

Don’t know much about her but I listened to one of her high school/college friends who refuted the conservative spin (bully on the bench, activist) with “she’s fair and honest.”

I suspect she is outspoken which for some means “bully, b*tchy” if it happens to be a woman……sort of the equivalent of Hillary being labeled as a “b*ll buster”…..

    sigh….

Personally, I would have been deeply disappointed if Obama had not chosen a woman.  The fact that she is a Latina is an added bonus in my view, along with the fact that she grew up in poor neighborhoods in the Bronx.  Unlike conservatives, I believe life experience and the ability to empathize do matter and one SHOULD have empathy because without it one may as well be a robot.

    Vaya Sonia!

I will be screaming loud and clear if the rethugs block her.

So will a host of others.

    I’m ready for a fight!

    Bring it on.

six of the nine justices on the Supreme Court will be Catholic.   Should this matter?  Does this matter?   Should religion count as a factor when weighing diversity?    I’d like to say that it shouldn’t matter, but I have to admit to a small twinge of concern that one religion is so over represented on the Court.   The Catholic men, save perhaps the swing voter Kennedy, are all anti-choice.

I presume that Sotomayor is in favor of maintaining Roe v. Wade, but will she be swayed when the bishops start denying her communion as they have done for prominent Catholic politicians (Ferraro, Kerry, Biden).?

Certainly I hope she has a smooth confirmation, but I’d like to see a bit more religious diversity on the Court next time.  How about an atheist or two?  Or a Hindu?  Or you name it.
