Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Friday Morning Herd Check-in and Open Thread for the Moosekins

Make sure you let your peeps know where to find you!

If you are new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh.

– If you Fail someone accidentally, it is no big deal. Meesely Mentor Chris Blask on “mojo”:

“The Moose doesn’t do “mojo” in a standard fashion. Credit is earned on a more amorphous social basis than traditional blogoprofiling – more like real life.”

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Here is a great link to have open in a tab: Motley Moose Recent Comments

This is pretty darned easy to remember … the posting rules for a new diary:

Be excellent to each other… or else

From Chris Blask on Moosing:

… the Moose is an exercise in socialization. While there is a political tilt to it and we try to talk about serious issues as much as is tolerable, an overarching goal of civility in discourse is much more the point.

Like any group of friends there are moments when things can get a bit dodgy, either because some lunkhead is crashing the party or a couple good friends butt heads, but like any healthy group we try and usually succeed to come back into balance.

If you are a new moose (or an old moose) looking for a second chance to make a first impression, you can start right here.

  1. IE 9 users seem to be able to post comments now.

For the rest of you, the workaround to is to do a right-click on the date/time stamp of a comment and choose Open in a New Tab. You should be able to reply in the new tab.

Kysen has a diary up asking for help in troubleshooting.

if for no other reason that I am less likely to get phone calls from people/places I dread… so I’m less twitchy about my phone. Heh.

And I have been playing with commenting in IE, trying to figure out what is wrong… and I realized that I had TOTALLY forgotten how deeply I loathe Internet Explorer. I want to beat it with a baseball bat. It gives me a STOPTHATSTUPIDSHITYOUSUCK.

And then I haz a PISSED.

    **Takes chill pill**

    Ahem. Friday helps.

I am so very glad the weekend is nigh.

Looking forward to junk food, beer, funny commercials, and the Ravens winning on Sunday. If being completely honest, I’m mostly looking forward to the junk food…it is one of the only days of the year I don’t get a ‘raised eyebrow’ for naughty eating. /grin

Currently 27&deg here in the Shenandoah Valley, and we got about 1/4″ of snow – enough to cause a 2 hour delay for the schools this morning. Kidlet’s not happy – she doesn’t want to ride the bus to school – she’s been driving with one of us – and, she wants to go play with power tools (carpentry class this morning).

  5. blue jersey mom

central NJ. I do not have classes on Friday. I survived the first week of school–only 13 more to go, but who’s counting.

    Quoting my morning tweet.

Half inch of snow on balcony, snowing again, #birds pecking at the seed that’s still in the feeders and under the snow. Life is good.

  7. I really don’t want to talk about it.

Kids off school again. They should just make January a holiday in eastern TN, from current experience.

Looking a the thread of support discussion both here and offline, my guess is that BlogAds is the culprit.

We believe the problem has to do with some 3rd party widget you have in the right-hand column on post pages. Would you be able to back up the right-hand column and remove widgets one by one until the problem is fixed in which case you’d know which one is causing this issue and we can deal with this?

The TechnoMoose replied that we would look into it.

Sounds good, thanks. I could have had our folks do it, but they’ve already spent a couple hours on this and since there doesn’t appear to be a quick fix and the problem doesn’t seem to be in the Soapblox code itself, I’m afraid the company will want to charge support money for that, so if you have someone available who can look into this – that is good.

With more coffee and maybe between calls today I will play with that and see what happens. BlogAds supplies what (very) little the Moose runs on other than member donations so it would be nice to keep it working, but the revenue is so low that selling a coffee mug or two would be as useful.

Speaking of that, as a comment-poll of the Moose population, would anyone here want to buy Moose Mugs or Ts, or would that be too commercial?

The Moose requires very little to keep it running, just the cost of server, DNS and related trivia to date. It wouldn’t hurt to have a couple bucks to pay other folks to fix things, and in an unimaginable Utopia maybe even write some custom code for the site someday.

I have been playing with Zazzle for the same purpose for the  non-profit I run, it would be easy to make neat Moose things, maybe immortalize some Moose’s art or diaries.

    Thoughts, anyone?

    It’s supposed to be cold!!

4 hours to go to interview.  Didn’t sleep well last night – excited and nervous at the same time.  Taking my time in getting showered and dressed…..

I’d really like to get this job – wish me luck that they like me and don’t waste time getting me there.

  9. bill d

30* here in Cowtown. Sorry to hear about all y’all’s frigidness and hope for the warmest and best for you.

    Somebody read Archie growing up.

    Ronniekins, Archiekins, Reggiekins, Bettykins.

Woke up to the 40’s. What’s weird is yesterday my thermometer showed 31° but the “official” temp at weather.com was 44°. They don’t always match, but usually it’s just a few degrees difference, but 13 degrees?

  11. pittiepat

out of the mid-20s until tomorrow.  Hope the sun shines on the project mailboxes as mine seems to be frozen(?).  The key fits, just like the last time I picked up mail, but now it won’t turn at all.

And the weekend shall begin very soon. No agenda this weekend! First time in a very long time. Yes, I know the Superbowl is on and in all likelihood my sons will be at my house to watch the game on the big TV. But that’s their deal not mine. Spouse person and I have nothing to do, honest to goodness down time.

Crazy weather continues in my part of N.Texas. Yesterday the closing temp was 71, I get up to 31 degrees. Well alrighty then, let’s just see what today holds. As long as the wind isn’t blowing at 90 to nothing, it’s all good. Wild winds kick up the mountain cedar pollen making for a miserable day of sneezing and coughing 😮

    Moosekin ( plural Moosekins) works.

With due respect to Genesis I, the wordmeseister say that the word is new, unique, i.e. a neologism and it is

    Here is why:

    1. kinis a diminutive:  meaning smallness

    1.1. Moose are BIG.

1.2 Motley Moose are physically smaller than the ruminate Moose and less Bullish that the Rooseveltian Moose.

    1.3. therefore Moosekin is Perfect.

    BSRH adds:

    2. No other word can be confused with it to its detriment, except maybe the first, and only with obvious malicious intent.

mousekin (plural mousekins). Small mouse [rodent] [well m.

miskin (obsolete, music) A little bagpipe. From Arabic مسكين (miskīn).

moleskin originally referring to the short, silky fur of a mole, is heavy cotton fabric, woven and then sheared to create a short, soft pile on one side.

Moleskine® A [famous] brand of notebooks, diaries, journals, writing instruments, reading accessories

[BRSH adds: which are traditionally used by architects, writers  and artists for their personal note taking and sketches….JanF has an image of a most famous moleskine in her email if it passes copyright muster.

here in the desert. Mr w stopped at our cabin in the hill country and found a downed tree from the last windstorm. He’s staying over today to deal with it since it’s threatening a stone retaining wall we just spent a bunch of money fixing last year. And he gets a chance to use his chain saw, haven’t met a guy yet who didn’t find to cut stuff up once he got one of those. Probably because I live in rural Texas mostly I know bubbas.

  16. slksfca

It’s sunny and blue of sky outdoors, with mild temperatures in store (mid-60s). All may not be right with the world, but this is a pleasant way to roll into the weekend.

    Happy Friday, Moosekinses!

  17. LabWitch

i’m here now and will drop fierces as soon as the coffee kicks in.  i’ll try not to screw up so much like i did yesterday LOL.

  18. Irish Patti

It is cloudy and threatening to snow here in windy Wyoming. My wonderful step kiddo is watching Arthur on PBS and later today we will go swimming at the local rec center.

Can I vent here just a little???? I am living in a place where the people have no concept of how government works. The biggest employer is the government, ranching and oil and gas. They complain about taxes and don’t see that the government is paying for this whole town. Most people here are unemployed and dislike higher education. It’s as if being stupid, ill-informed and ignorant is something to be prized. There is also a slew of Mormons here and I am so tempted put some D&D dice in a hat and start wring a book about what I see. It is frustrating to live here. There are as many people in this town as there were in my last apartment complex in Denver./rant

I need to complain a little.

My right thumb is clicking. The joint is acting like a toggle switch, click it’s straight, click it’s bent. Also it’s sore. Both thumbs have tightened up a little toward the palm of my hand but the left one doesn’t toggle or hurt, and I can mouse with my left hand, so it’s half good.

But that’s not what I’m complaining about.

I can’t find my right-handed carpal tunnel wrist brace. I’ve had two wrist braces for ten years. Now I can find the left one but not the right one. Isn’t that always the way. Drat. /complaint

from the interviewers mouth too.  She says that there are 4-5 more to interview for a total of 6-7 candidates.  Now to just keep my hopes in check…..  it’s going to be damned hard to do.

I just heard from the doctor’s office. The person said “She looked at the list of readings you gave us and said it’s fine, you don’t need to change anything about your medications” or words to that effect. “She said to come back in six months.”

My blood pressure is running 135 to 150 over 70 to 83, pulse 53 to 61. There are some normal readings during the day, though.

I’m experimenting with my meds, spreading one out to 4x a day for a while and taking readings. Maybe I’ll get better results that way.

Maybe this is the best I can get. I’m most likely maxed out on meds. I’ve been on them for over 20 years, increasing dosages of one or another every few years. Drat.
