Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

A Fun Exercise in Foreign Policy

Over the last month we have discussed the Israeli Election and now that it has come and gone we eventually will at least have one diary on the results.

I am a junkie for “Political Compass” type tests. I think I know myself but I like to know where I stand. SO…

In emailing with a friend he told me that he took a poll at the Israeli Democracy Institute’s website regarding Political Compass in Israel.

What happens, is that they ask a number of questions regarding your political thoughts and then place you on a grid to give you an idea where you stand. Now, for a couple of years I have always thought of myself as a Left Center type guy with tendencies towards social justice and/liberty. In commentary, I always said that I fit with either Avodah (Labor) and HaTanuah (Tzipi Livni’s Party), SO… when my friend mentioned this to me I decided to take the poll and see where I came out.

Surprise of Suprise, there were seven parties in my range. The closest was HaTanuah, and AmShalem (this surprised me at first until I read up on them – but they didn’t cross the electoral threshold so…) and then I was right in between Avodah (Labor), Yesh Atid, and Kadima.  On the outskirts was UTJ and Tal (an Arab Party).

The furthest party from me (and I am proud to say this) was Otzma L’Yisrael (Strong Israel – a fascist party that did not cross the threshold), Yisrael Beitanu, HaBayit HaYehudi, and Hadash. And then at about equal distances out of my zone,Meretz, Likud, Shas, Balad,

Needless to say I was pretty proud of this because this is kind of where I thought I would land. I am no radical leftist though I lean left, and I for sure am no Rightist. It was nice to see that confirmed. So pretty much I guess this dispells the nonsense over at Daily Kos about me being a Rightist. Where one Celtic Merlin had this to say:

“Lately – over about the last 12 to 15 months – he has moved more and more in line with Israeli hard-liners”

Whoops… Oh well facts are always pesky things.

Anyway, take the Compass test and see where you come up. You might be surprised (or not) and honestly you will learn something.

Anyway, here is the link to the test: 2013  Israeli Election Compass (http://en.idi.org.il/tools-and-data/guttman-center-for-surveys/2013-compass/) – Where do you fit in… Please let us know as well as your thoughts on that.

so I can’t contribute to the conversation. One thing here though, we try not to disparage other websites or bloggers, so as not to muck up our moose pond. Occasional mentions are unavoidable, but I’m sure you’ll find the lack of rancor here very refreshing after a couple of days.

    Welcome to the herd! 🙂

but counting on my toe hairs is merely 521 years old. To save straining your eyes and bifocals , that began in 1492.So , it is with great solemnity and respect that I say I dig the troubles of your ethnic identity people – folks have been after Jews with a zealous genocidal goal for at least 10 times as long. And zeal to rival that of Colonel Sevier , General Jackson ,General Sheridan, others of great fame and wealth and prospering via doing bad things unto others. The more I read the more I see that people just naturaly can’t let different people the hell alone – but I really do think we could learn to. Thinking of MLK’s “I Have A Dream ” speech , the one on that subject that has been most stirring in my own hearing , dang! It really takes little time , little trouble , little expense to smile and nod to That One as well as This One. Peace to you , to yours , to mine , and to everyone and the many they call Theirs.

… with regard to the country I live in and love, I am firmly in the “Libertarian Left” quadrant.  With regard to a country I love and would love to be able to visit again forever the future, I am in the “Authoritarian Left” quadrant (although pretty close to, and not far along the x-axis).  It seems like others here are in the same boat.  Can something be deduced from that?  I wonder if we lived in Israel and visited the US if the charts would be opposite?

I took the quiz just to learn. I know very little about the Parties involved, and only some of the individuals. But, learn, I did.

I end up in the upper left quadrant about dead center, whatever that means…I think its good, but I’m not sure…lol

    Thanks again.

Oh yeah, I’m another one left of Ghandi on the US Political Compass.

i had no idea what i was doing most of the time but i did it.

i’m with tzipi, upper left.  not so surprised.  if i only knew what it meant.

about Israeli politics and events over there in general.  It put me in the upper left quadrant, but not hugely far away from the center of the graph.  Am Shalem appears to be the closest to me in the circle; the others were Hatnu’a, Kadima, Yesh Atid, and Labor.

Regarding the US Political compass, I end up here:

    Economic Left/Right: -9.12

    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.97

That puts me in the bottom left of the chart, almost as far left as you can go, and only a little up from the bottom.  Way to the left of Jill Stein, heh.  🙂
