Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Friday Morning Herd Check-in and Open Thread for the Moosekins

Make sure you let your peeps know where to find you!

If you are new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh.

– If you Fail someone accidentally, it is no big deal. Meesely Mentor Chris Blask on “mojo”:

“The Moose doesn’t do “mojo” in a standard fashion. Credit is earned on a more amorphous social basis than traditional blogoprofiling – more like real life.”

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Here is a great link to have open in a tab: Motley Moose Recent Comments

28 degrees and mighty snowy. It has snowed 12 inches so far, and it’s still going strong. The wind is starting to pick up though. It’s blowing straight off Lake Huron. If you are in the area this storm is headed, be careful. It’s a nasty one.

12-18 inches of snow are aniticpated in the next 30 hours, supposedly starting later this morning.  Schools are already closed.  I am leaving early to try and get as much of a full day of work in as possible.  From noon, I will play it by ear.  Fortunately, Metro North is adding afternoon trains in anticipation of an early exodus.

I can see it sticking to the grass outside my apartment building.  Yuck.  Snow, snow go away and please don’t come back some other day.

We’re in for a very frosty weekend in Deutschland, with temps going down to ca. 14°F, but no more snow.  Hope you all stay safe, snug and warm.

    (Good middle-of-the-night to me!)

43F and raining off-and-on here on the Pacific shore. If I have to be awake at this hour, at least I have splendid company here. 🙂

It’s 32&deg here in the Shenendoah Valley, and we have a light dusting. We’re expecting a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, turning into all rain later. I suspect I’ll be driving a salt truck in an hour or so. Looking forward to the weekend – 36 tomorrow, 43 Sunday, and 57 on Monday. Just hope the 30% chance of rain on Monday holds off – that’s shed construction day.

…I’m going to the Legion of Honor Museum to see “Royal Treasures from the Louvre,” an exhibit of items from that museum’s decorative arts collection, many of which have never left France before. I am fully expecting to revel in a whole lotta exquisite craftsmanship; but the show got an odd and rather carping review from the San Francisco Chronicle.

“Royal Treasures” might seem to have anticipated a Romney presidency, had it not been planned years earlier. Instead, it merely rekindles the Reaganite vision of private wealth and public squalor that has polluted not just politics but also American imagination for decades.

Huh? I get the reviewer’s point (and he admits that the show isn’t for him), but frankly I find it somewhat irrelevant. The objects in question were either created 1) without political motive; or 2) to extol the grandeur of the Ancien Regime; and in either case, deserve to be appreciated for their own merits. And if a political case must be made, I can visualize plenty of worthwhile lessons to be derived from spectacular excess. This review just sticks in my contrarian craw. 😉

It snowed last night, but just a dusting. It was the very bottom tippy tip of the mega storm apocalypse of doom that’s hitting the north today. However, it’s done with us. We’re headed for a high of 40.

    Apropos of nothing whatsoever:

my school has announced “Situation Normal: Classes are in session and offices are open. All classes that begin before noon will be held as scheduled. Please check back for updates as we evaluate the approaching snow storm throughout the day.”

I’m glad I don’t have to teach today – my school rarely closes for weather, and makes staff come in even when they cancel classes.

Hubby decided to stay home (yay), he is not going to risk the commute to NYC – because getting back home will be the problem.

I’m going to spend the day at home writing and staying warm.

Stay safe – those of you who have to go out in bad weather.

otherwise, just cold rain here in northern Virginia.

I keep absent-mindedly “tipping” people’s comments only to realize moments later that I “failed” them.  I tried to go back and change them all to “fierce,” but if I overlooked one, please know it was an accident. Hard to get used to such a change from the Other Site.

Organized the tax materials last night, hope to start today after I come back from the gym.

26 and after the sun arrives later, maybe reaching 32.

the lakefront got 4-5 inches of perfect snowball snow last night.

very tired Dear O this morning even after 9 hours of sleep, which i never need. being out yesterday was tough, came home wet and exhausted. all the woozles gave me this look as we opened the door into the pouring rain.

    Today’s synchronicity:

    1. Out of all the novels I could be listening to, this one has just mentioned… a drone!

    2. It says it’s a predator drone, at which moment I laid eyes on the adorable predator above.

What else does the day have in store, I wonder?

and in the spirit of building a positive and unified community, I will refrain from informing y’all of our weather.

  14. pittiepat

snow,  no rain, just mostly cloudy.  I’d be glad for some snow but nothing like what is heading the way of you Moose in the northeast.  Nothing doing today except another couple of hours in the pool.  Water walking is good but the “Move My Joints” class is a killer.  Still sore, but I assume it will be better today.

  15. cassandracarolina

All my kinfolk are in MA and NH so I am following the storm closely, though. Hope all you moosoids stay safe, wherever you may be.

  16. jlms qkw

she is the early bird in our family.

    she said “snow: yes!”

    paused

    then

    “new snow: no!”

we are expecting a little bit of snow later today and it will displace the current inversion.

  17. It is 43 at the moment with rain expected. Planning on a quiet weekend. Princess Pixie is taking over my quilt and unicorn so I may as well just work on art and other computer stuff. 😉

The novel I’m listening to, released in 2006 and selected not for the subject but for the author, is saying something like “Soldier, I am about to give you an order to kill unarmed American civilians [with a predator drone].” It goes on to discuss how dangerous the “objects” are.

There is no particular reason I should have chosen THIS book to read THIS week.

I am shuddering. I am fixing a cup of tea. But I’m going to finish the book.

Those storms in the North East look to be more than just a tad harrowing…To the Moosefolk in those areas, y’all be careful and try to stay warm.

Not much new in my small town this morning. Little cooler in N. Texas this morning, some rain for the weekend, maybe a few thunderstorms.

Oldest kiddo’s birthday celebration tomorrow…He’ll be 31 my word where did the time go?!! I still hear the five year old running around shouting “By the power of GraySkull!” He Man, he was a big fan. I miss that little guy.

  20. Nurse Kelley

We’ll get snow beginning Saturday night, and we’ll take any precip you want to send us. The drought continues along the Front Range of the Rockies, to the point that “they” are already talking about summer water restrictions. I am not looking forward to the fire season. 🙁
