Stand With Texas Women Rally – lots of pictures

I went to the rally at the Texas Capitol today. Wow. It was just amazing. People came from all over the state. We filled the whole south lawn — all the way down to the street, and it’s a big lawn. And it was noon on a Monday in Texas. I’ve got lots of pictures

We were apparently so scary that mounted officers had to be imported from Houston:

now, granted, there were a whole lot of us:

Natalie Maines sang the national anthem & of course, that song about not making nice — the whole crowd sang along:

this airplane circled us the whole time:

did I mention that there were a whole freaking lot of us

there were speakers — 2 amazing rabbis, whose names I don’t remember, sorry – but they were both great –  and my friend the fantastic Jim Rigby

and the fantastic Senator Van de Putte, she of the “how loud does a woman have to speak?” question

and my state senator, Kirk Watson – who I am so proud to call my friend – he was the one playing the Senate rule book like Clapton on guitar

then there were 2 actresses – Lisa Edelstein and Stephanie March (& if anyone recorded Ms March’s speech & loaded it on youtube, I would be so grateful — she was freaking amazing)

then there was Cecile Richards, who is so very much her mother’s daughter:

and of course, the star of the show, Wendy Davis, here she is with all the other elected officials who spoke:

and here she is speaking:

I think this is the best one — you can see my state Rep, Elliott Naishtat, behind her & to the left (he is the best, kindest person you could ever hope to meet)

an exhausting, amazing day — as I go through my pictures, I’ll edit this diary & add to it

thank FSM is wasn’t over 100 again today, there would have been medical issues

but this was a pretty damn amazing day

  2. If my Vagina shot bullets, could I conceal it from Rick Perry and John Kasich?

Rick Perry, bless his heart, doesn’t have the good sense God gave a goose – otherwise known as a C minus average at Texas A&M University.  That boy hasn’t had a light on in the attic since someone in kindergarten told him he had nice hair.  Perry says that A&M shaped him into the person he is today.  What shape is obtuse?  He earned a C in U.S. History, a D in Shakespeare, and a D in the principles of economics.  Perry even got a C in gym which might explain why he finds joy in picking on defenseless, poor women who can’t fight back.  I don’t even know what to say about his C in animal breeding.  If the man can’t even figure out how animals reproduce, why do we expect him make rational decisions about women’s reproductive freedoms? […]

And for those women out there, who think this is really about saving innocent babies, let me assure you it’s not.   Republican politicians have passed legislation to define pregnancy as beginning at fertilization which means most types of birth control are now defined as causing abortions.  You might want to think about that really hard.  Are they saving babies or just calling you a slut?  Honestly, Perry and Kasich think women run to Planned Parenthood like it was a 7-Eleven.  I’ll take a soda, a bag of chips and an abortion please.

They end with “VOTE IN 2014“. Excellent advice.

I really appreciate your posting these pics for us. Wish I could have been there with you :-

I see that they followed through and cut off testimony with approximately 1000 women’s testimony not heard during the House hearing last night. So #hb2 has already passed.

  4. Majority Of Texans Against Abortion Bill

The findings from Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research found that 51 percent of Texas are opposed to a “proposal would put in place new restrictions and regulations on abortion providers that would likely result in the closure of all but five abortion clinics […]

… a huge majority of 80 percent agreed with the following statement read by the pollsters: “A special session of the legislature should focus on issues like education, jobs, and the economy, instead of bringing up social issues like abortion that were already addressed in the regular session of the legislature.”
