Friday Coffee Hour: Check In and Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind. TGIF! Hope it has been a good week for everyone.

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the weather jar comment are still welcome.

Friday Coffee Hour and check-in is an open thread and general social hour. Come back when time allows through the day – the conversation continues.

It’s traditional but not obligatory to give us a weather check where you are and let us know what’s new, interesting, challenging or even routine in your life lately. Nothing is particularly obligatory here except:

Always remember the Moose Golden (Purple?) Rule:

Be kind to each other… or else.

What could be simpler than that, right?

Heading for a high of 51.

Had a great drive down; headng home tomorrow. Thankfully a lovely family visit. How was your Thanksgiving?

For a high of may be 40. Sipping my caffeine to wake up to go to my mothers and take care of her needs. Bullwinkle was up for his breakfast and then went back to sleep.

    Have a good day everyone.

  3. 13 degrees here on its way up to 31 degrees … a palindromic temperature day.

Feeling stuffed and in slow motion this morning. I am not sure how many of my clients are working (I hope it is zero) but I need to kickstart my brain out of day-off mode.

    Need moar coffee!!

had a wonderful dinner, though sadly had to interrupt it at one point to deal with online racist insanity (giving chocolate donuts). My godchild who is the person who twisted my arm to get me to blog, was at dinner, and we had a really good discussion about racism and the history of racist cartooning.

I am now happy that I will be eating yummy leftovers for a while. Some things taste better the second day anyway.

    Hope you all are enjoying.

    Hugs!

    Now for another cuppa coffee.

all had a great day and this year will bring lots more things for which to be thankful.

I must be totally out of it. While checking something or other I saw Obama talking about a new family member. I rushed to the Google and saw that was indeed the case. There is a new dog. How could I not have known and where did Sunny come from? Is this news to all?  Looks like a cute dog.

For those who can’t access the link,  Kristoff was commenting on letters he has received from readers re the ACA. They include stuff like

A reader … suggested taking children from parents and putting them in orphanages. …

… “Why should I have to subsidize someone else’s child? How about personal responsibility? If you procreate, you provide.”

… an uninsured man who delayed seeing a doctor about a condition that turned out to be colon cancer,….

“What kind of a lame brain doofus is this guy?” one reader asked. “And like it’s our fault that he couldn’t afford to have himself checked out?”

His reply, after a discussion of what factors can make someone poor or homelesss

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, let’s remember that the difference between being surrounded by a loving family or being homeless on the street is determined not just by our own level of virtue or self-discipline, but also by an inextricable mix of luck, biography, brain chemistry and genetics.

For those who are well-off, it may be easier to castigate the irresponsibility of the poor than to recognize that success in life is a reflection not only of enterprise and willpower, but also of random chance and early upbringing.

Low-income Americans, who actually encounter the needy in daily life, understand this complexity and respond with empathy. Researchers say that’s why the poorest 20 percent of Americans donate more to charity,[bold is mine] as a fraction of their incomes, than the richest 20 percent. Meet those who need help, especially children, and you become less judgmental and more compassionate.

And compassion isn’t a sign of weakness, but a mark of civilization  [bold mine].

Hubby just brought me some coffee, bless him. Taking it easy this “black” Friday because we made horrendous efforts all week to tidy the house (never an easy task, because we’re Grade-A slobs), buy the food, drag out the china and extra tables, polish the silver, etc. Thank Goddess for my younger son, the ex-chef! He came over at 9 yesterday morning and cooked the turkey, made the stuffing, peeled the potatoes, prepared the brussels sprouts (and the bok choy for his pregnant wife), and whipped the cream that he flavored with hazelnut for the dessert. I took care of the rest of the chores, and Dearly Beloved walked the excitable Mr. Monty Beagle.

It was a wonderful Thanksgiving, 11 in all, and there is good news–my daughter-in-law was told Wednesday night that the baby expected in June is perfectly healthy and it’s a BOY! We are all excited as so far there have been seven girls in the younger generation and only one boy, in England.

Hope everyone will have a nice, relaxing weekend!

it didn’t freeze last night – and won’t over the weekend, and we’re getting closer to normal highs, I think 60 today

Another day of sleeping in for me. Both days after the alarm went off, I lazed in bed for what I thought was around 20 minutes, which turned out to be more like 45. Pretty wild for someone with such bad insomnia. My forehead is clearing up, so I set the alarm for tomorrow for the ungodly hour to go to my workout. Today’s weigh in was depressing.

I should probably think of some reason to leave the house today. But for now, I’m just eating breakfast & watching the news.

Kinda chilly this morning, still in the 30’s. Brr. I am not going outside until it’s over 40. It might just make it there today. 😉

Had a lovely huge turkey yesterday, now lots of leftovers. Turkey soup already in process.

for 10-minute Cream of Wheat. In Amurrica, we will not cook our farina for any longer than 2-1/2 minutes, thank you very much. 8-]

Venturing out of the house today for paper plates, milk and the aforesaid Queen o’ Week, as we used to call it.

    drizzly day here.

had a thanksgiving dinner that couldn’t be beat, but we didn’t (thankfully) have to make a run to the dump (which is still closed on thanksgiving).  Did our turkey according to this recipe. Added some sauteed vegetables, cranbeery sauce, and an apple pie, and came out with a fine meal (with of course a nice bottle of wine).

gotta put in a few hours of work today… presentation due to the meeting organizers on 1 Dec… yikes. no shopping for me… just heavenly left overs and powerpoints.

  12. Hello Moooooose!

What is it about my kids that makes them want me to cry in public.

The Grandboy was wearing that T-shirt for Thanksgiving dinner/Hanukkah which I dubbed Thanksalatke.  If you can’t read it says he’s gonna be a big brother in July : )
