Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Sunday All Day Check-in for the Herd

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

On weekends (and holidays), you may find the check-in thread earlier or later than normal because … it is the weekend! Moosies need their beauty rest:

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce … or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

  1. She taught us that we are each wonderfully made, intricately woven, and put on this Earth for a purpose far greater than we could ever imagine. And when I think about Maya Angelou, I think about the affirming power of her words.

The first time I read “Phenomenal Woman”, I was struck by how she celebrated black women’s beauty like no one had ever dared to before. (Applause.) Our curves, our stride, our strength, our grace. Her words were clever and sassy; they were powerful and sexual and boastful. And in that one singular poem, Maya Angelou spoke to the essence of black women, but she also graced us with an anthem for all women — a call for all of us to embrace our God-given beauty.

Got a really lousy night’s “sleep” last night. My mind just would not shut up. I have my cd on repeat, playing a rain sounds cd. I even tried my trick of counting to some random number over & over (if I just count, that just tells me how much time has passed, so I pick some random number – 7 or 12 or something & just count over & over. The idea is if I’m deliberately talking to myself, the chattering part of my brain can’t get in a word)

Anyway, I’m eating breakfast & watching Up. They had an interesting discussion about how Obama can get stuff done with the time he has left. I cooked some quinoa already, it is cooling. I’ll reheat it & add in the frozen vegetables & maybe I’ll wash the kale & tear it up before I leave for church. That’ll be one dish for next week completely done.

There’s a farewell party for our 3 retiring pastors after church, so I’m trying to compress stuff. And wow do I need to sleep tonight.

My son told me to go down to Lowe’s and pick up my new window air conditioner for the workshop. He had placed the order on-line. I have not been able to do anything out there during the day due to heat. In the evening it’s still quite warm, but if I leave the big doors open to let air in, bugs of all kinds are attracted to the shop lights. My future son-in-law is here to help me set it up, because it is not really a one-person job.

The next door neighbor cut down the 200+ year old oak tree that had been shading it. This neighbor hates leaves, squirrels, birds and trees in general.

Next week, I will be planting some new trees. We already set out a pink dogwood and Japanese Maple. Right next to where that giant oak tree stood, I plan to plant a couple of fast growing trees just inside my side of the property line. I like pecan trees, the “tree rats” love them, and I like pecan pie, and pecans in chicken salad.

I resumed progress on clearing out stuff yesterday…..a truck full went to Goodwill and several boxes of fabric to Ragfinery. I’ve got so much fabric it will take awhile to sort it, but it’s a relief to have the process underway again.
