The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

On weekends (and holidays), you may find the check-in thread earlier or later than normal because … it is the weekend! Moosies need their beauty rest:

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.”

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else”

    66 here in the Hudson Vally – going up to 72.

    Today is “hubby brings home the puppy day” (this evening)

    He’s picking her up in Philly.

    Have no idea how the 2 dogs and 2 cats we have are going to react to a rambunctious newcomer.

    My life is going to be very interesting here for a while (to put it mildly).

    stories up seemed only natural to put up a third. In all the horrible news of the last few days, there was one NY story I loved.  A police officer noticed that his canine partner, a nine year old German Shepherd named Caesar, who was nearing retirement age, was injured. He called for help. Evidently (I love this) a canine member of the police force gets the same care that a human one does

    When canine members of the police force are seriously injured in the line of duty, they are afforded all the same privileges as their two-legged companions.

    As Caesar struggled for breath, it seemed the quickest way to get him to much-needed care was by air. The aviation unit is based at Floyd Bennett Field and a police helicopter was prepared, but fog and rain made flying risky.

    They had to drive.

    Police commanders in various precincts briefly closed streets along the route to Manhattan as Caesar was sped to Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists, where a medical team was waiting.

    “You are with this dog 24-7,” said Officer Compitello, who was still at the hospital Thursday afternoon, speaking by phone.

    “The bond is as strong as with your kids. Having this happen in front of you,” he said, pausing. “I don’t know the words.”

    There’s a happy ending. Caesar recovered and is doing well and is back home with his partner and family,

    was trained to find survivors in rubble. The pair helped find survivors in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake and have been dispatched to some of the worst accidents in the city, including crane collapses and building explosions

    Eating breakfast & watching disaster day on Up: Iraq, Chris Christie, the Republican race for Majority Leader….

    Today, I swear I’m exercising. No, really. And groceries, and the library. After I wake up.

    That list I’ve been mentioning has morphed into real life piles of half finished stuff…..three semi sorted baskets of desk stuff, plants placed by pots waiting to be planted, a mound to be mailed….I may just stay in my room all day!

    and-white day in NoVa, flowers leaping happily in the garden after all the rain.

    Hoping, on this mostly child-free weekend, to get some writing done. Have to create a Summer Solstice ritual for my circle and finish my Solstice short story, “Out of the Sea.” It would be nothing short of great to work on my novella today, but that would be too optimistic.

    Dearly is going to watch the World Cup on TV, of course. The new dishwasher won’t arrive until Monday, so the house will continue to be a wreck. At least we can move the porch cushions out of the family room and out onto the screened porch. Looking forward to tea on the porch and a little downtime this afternoon.

    Must get ready for lunch with two of the Circle sisters–hope everyone in Mooseland will have a good day!
