Thursday Morning Herd Check-in: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps know where to find you!

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least content.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else”

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

You can follow the daily moosetrails here: Motley Moose Recent Comments.

Yes, I charged the phone overnight.

today – probably for 10 minutes.

(Dee, looks around, checks to see where mittens are, to get ready to go out and warm up the car)

    School today.

  4. the Magic Day!

Let’s begin with the easy ones:

the 4th day of the 4th month and

the 6th day of the 6th month and

the 8th day of the 8th month and

the 10th day of the 10th month and

the 12th day of the 12th month

ALL fall on the same day of the week, the MAGIC DAY. In 2013 the Magic Day is Thursday.

Note that for the EVEN numbered months starting in April, the day and month match up.)

    Besides those:

the 9th day of the 5th month and

the 5th day of the 9th month and

the 11th day of the 7th month and

the 7th day of the 11th month

ALL fall on the same day of the week, the MAGIC DAY. In 2013 the Magic Day is Thursday.

Note how 5 and 9 match up [think “9 to 5”] and 7 and 11 match up [think “7-11”].)

  5. Going to rain today. Oh well. I still need to get the car in and get it serviced. Then work on art for a while. Trying to update all the older pictures with newer and better models. I did the original of Teddy Bear’s Picnic for my Mom who wanted a picture of it. I of course put Pixie and one of her squirrels in it to please Mom. Updated it yesterday. I’m sure she is looking down from Heaven and smiling.

It’s supposed to get up close to 60F this afternoon.

That reptile photo at the top!!!  Someone was really patient to take that.

Eating breakfast – yogurt & blueberries – and playing on the intertubez. I had a veru bad night’s sleep – woke up at 3-something, then 4-something…. sigh. I put 10 teaspoons of tea in my tea this morning. Hope that helps.

My Mac (at home) won’t talk to the internet. I have no idea why. I closed it one night, opened it the next evening, and no internet. I’m going to have to re-join Best Buy’s Geek Squad & have someone come look at it, because the PC (which is what I bought from BB, my brother didn’t give me the Mac till Thanksgiving) just won’t do. Though I do miss having a “right click” — for one thing, when I misspell a word, all I know is it’s wrong, I don’t know how to fix it. And this not talking to the internet thing — if it was a PC, I could probably have fixed it. But actually being on the internet – the Mac is way better. Just no idea what to do when something goes wrong on a Mac.

It is still cold today, by Austin standards. 40 with a high in the mid-60s. And we’re having a make-up swim practice tonight. That’s insane. I’ll freeze. Yes, the pool is heated, I’m talking about after.

Anyway – today: work, swim. Happy Friday Eve!

We are just getting around this morning.  About to feed the kids some breakfast.  Had a great day yesterday.  We hopped in the car and went down to Starved Rock to hike around.  The weather was perfect and the waterfalls were melting and the birds were singing.  The kids loved it.  Slept great last night.  We should do that everyday!

Today it is 28 going up to near 60.  My daughter has ballet this morning.  And I am going to work for a few hours this evening (one of the other docs has tonight off).

Oh!  Appraisal came in good!  So, in between ballet and work I will be calling moving companies, electricians, utility companies, etc.

    Have a great day!

but we’re headed for a fast warm-up today. The iris are getting ready to bloom, we have an old bearded variety that has naturalized to this area. Mostly purple but we’ve a few white ones too, I like iris. The jasmine is loaded with flower buds, it lives in the greenhouse until the danger of frost is over, it will scent the whole yard. I’m going to plant moonflowers this year, they bloom at night and have a nice scent as well. They’re pollinated by these huge moths that look like hummingbirds, the blooms pop open with an audible sound so they’re fun to watch.

It is a joy to see such a large gathering of relatively sane folks at a blog.

Now I think I have figured out know where the term madness comes from.

Hope everyone here has the kind of day they want to have.

upper 50s and clearing by the time I get off here – still insane with the priority registration – and head to the Courthouse for another QC committee meeting.  I have a grump this morning.  Been firmly told that it doesn’t matter if I see a problem that communication will resolve, it’s not my business.  (The old “you don’t work for xxx, you work for me” crap.  Then why the eff do you all copy me in on the emails?)  And since the truthful reply – “yes it is and I don’t work for you I work for the University” – could get me fired I didn’t make it.  Sigh.  Hope everybody is having a better day than I am.  Y’all take care, bf

A wet day in store. I have no errands to run or any reason to go out into the storm, except to get something for dinner. I may order something to be delivered, haven’t had Chinese food in awhile.

Steamkettle is getting ready to shriek. Happy Thursday, meese!

The grand kids are having a good time….the dining room table is covered with paper airplane and art projects, the living room has three puzzles underway, the iPods and Kindles are all charging, the bike helmets are all accounted for, the refrig is restocked…..and they are all still asleep!

Grand parents are a bit weary 🙂

…having dinner just a couple of miles from me, at the Getty’s mansion. He’s here to raise money for Congressional Democrats for the midterm elections. Dinner was $32,000 per person. Today: more fundraisers among the rich, this time down the Peninsula in wealthy enclaves like Atherton.

Local news last night gave decent coverage to a healthy group of protesters near the Getty mansion, holding signs that expressed opposition to the Keystone pipeline project. And just before last night’s dinner, the President was at a cocktail reception in another part of the City, at the home of a billionaire supporter who is a staunch opponent of the pipeline (Tom Steyer). Word is that Mr. Steyer gave the President an earful on the subject. 🙂

I hope that doesn’t mean everyone is working too hard.

TV news is now saying that the worst of the rain has passed to the east, with only scattered showers in store for the afternoon. So it looks like I WILL get a chance for an afternoon walk today. I plan to head for the five-and-dime to look for a new coffee mug, and if they haven’t got what I want I’ll go to the ACE hardware store across the street and see if they’ve got one.

Otherwise I’ll come home and hop online to look for one. Not having a big mug for my morning brew is really getting old.

Yeah, I know. First-world problems, LOL!

    So, here goes….

Several years ago the State legislature made a rule that one can get only so much pseudoephedrin per month.  It is impossible to purchase a package of 15 every 15 days during the year.  I was out of my generic Claritin-D today.  Went to the drugstore and was told that I couldn’t purchase a 10 pack until the 8th of the month because I’ve already purchased enough… I had 1.5 milligram??? left before the ‘month’ ended…. I could get a 5 pack, but the place I went to didn’t carry 5 packs, name brand or generic…. so I had to go to HyVee where they did have a 5 pack.  It cost me $8.55 for 5 tablets, or 1.71 each….. Highway robbery if you ask me!!

The original place told me that the State legislature is going to make it even more difficult to purchase pseduoephedrin products without a prescription come the new fiscal year in July.  Just how the hell is a poor, or working poor, person supposed to get the time and/or money to go to a doctor to get a prescription for an over the counter product??  Most clinics, offices, hospitals around here WILL NOT see patients without insurance unless they pay up front before getting service and the cost of the appointment can be in the hundreds of dollars (University of Iowa charged me $275 for a 15 minute ‘visit’ to get my prescriptions renewed (didn’t realize I was out of prescription refills until it was too late to xfer records to a ‘better’ place) and that was with a pissant resident and not the DOCTOR.)  The pharmacist also told me that come the new fiscal year, it WILL be impossible to get enough for a full year, let alone a full month without a prescription.

    Jackasses the lot of them – State legislature….. /rant over – maybe….
