Wednesday Watering Hole: Check In & Hangout for the Herd

The common Moose, Alces alces, unlike other members of the deer family, is a solitary animal that doesn’t form herds. Not so its rarer but nearest relative, Alces purplius, the Motley Moose. Though sometimes solitary, the Motley Moose herds in ever shifting groups at the local watering hole to exchange news and just pass the time.

A Moose in my neck of the woods right now would look like this:

    YUCK!! 28&deg with rain and snow mixed. We’re expecting snow, sleet, ice, and rain before all is said and done. One advantage of my working on recovering from hand surgery… I’m not out salting streets or plowing snow in this mess.

    This is what the morning commute will be like around here…

    15 degrees here on its way over to 15. Easy enough to remember. The wind chills are below zero and some sort of precipitation is lashing against the north windows in my office. Probably snow which the radar shows is nearly done.

    Scanning the news this morning reminds me of why it is best to let the news steep before you weigh in. I see a lot of singed pates mainly from the lamestream media trying to understand “words”. Shades of CNN reporting that SCOTUS had declared the ACA unconstitutional! The best headline I saw, obviously after the dust had settled, was “Dems: Obamacare’s Effect On Workers Is A Feature, Not A Bug”. People being able to retire early and buy health insurance is a good thing. I know people who retired early with plenty to live on but who had to decide whether to forego health insurance because at their age (62-64) the cost of an insurance policy was $5,000 a month. Now they can retire and possibly open up a job for some new college graduate. One of the least touted benefits of the Affordable Care Act was delinking health insurance from jobs. People stuck in jobs they hated (and were possibly ill-suited for) because they had a spouse or child who needed the health insurance can now chase their dreams.

    Another busy day today for me. Stay out of trouble, all y’all!!

    it is still too dark for me to see the extent of the snow falling here in Saugerties NY – I can hear the plows passing by on the road outside.

    Just checked – my college is obdurately “open” (thankfully I don’t teach today) All the other schools in the area are closed

    call a wintry mix slashing against my windows. Hope everyone is safe and dry. Hope that all who are ailing are healing.

    their ice coating and my car is one big green icicle in the driveway. Thank Goddess my son is going to take Miss Pink Cheeks to day care so I don’t have to go out this morning. “They” say the freezing rain will give way to regular rain later today.  Good.

    Pleased to hear that Northern California will get some rain. My relatives in Australia write me that the heat is blistering. One said she has air conditioning only in her bedroom so she simply retreats into that space every night at 6 p.m. My sister-in-law in Melbourne says it seems to be 40 degrees C. every Saturday, when she has to look after the grandchildren while their parents house-hunt. I know that 30 C. is 86 F., but I forget what 40 C. is–110 F.?

    Apparently it’s squalid in Sochi. Imagine having to stay in a hotel in which the toilets don’t work. Ugh, what a nightmare.

    Really, really sleepy. 4 hours of sleep. Ugh. I’ve been taking this thing called “Peaceful Sleep” – it has lavendar in it. It doesn’t help that much. Sigh. Looking at how many times I wake up a night (11 last night), I wonder if I have sleep apnea.

    Anyway, it is cold (for Texas) & going to get colder. I have to cover the plants tonight, as we’ll have 2 nights of hard freezes.

    Given the 4 hours of sleep, my goal for today is to remain upright. I’ve only been getting in 5,000 steps a day, maybe try for 1 10,000 step day…..

    We are just getting light rain this morning. I hope it and the warmer temps today are enough to melt off a good bit of this snow!

    Finally broke in my new insurance card yesterday; saw new PCP. Now I get to make appointments for a couple of specialists, yay.

    My bed is warm and cozy so I’m staying here! Ron and our son are going to breakfast before his IV and then the Dr. will see him and decide if he can change to oral meds. The swelling in his leg is much improved today.

    I should go to the pool this morning but I absolutely must go to the grocery store and I’m not sure I can do both.
