“Doctors have no business inquiring of patients
whether they are choosing to exercise their
constitutional rights,” NRA spokeswoman
Jacqueline Otto said in a statement Friday.
“When a child is brought to a doctor, it is to seek
their expertise in pediatrics, not firearms ownership.”

Parroting LaPierre’s Paranoia
[From The Hill
“About 55 children die a week as a result of gun violence,” AAP President Thomas McInerny told The Hill. “For us, that’s a big problem.”
McInerny’s group, which represents 60,000 U.S. pediatricians, has recommended asking patients about guns for decades in its clinical guidelines.
The practice has a long history in U.S. medicine, McInerny said.
“If there’s a gun in the house, a family member is three times more likely to die from a gunshot wound [than] an intruder,” he added. “We advise parents about car safety seats, about bicycle helmets, and about guns. It’s just part of our prevention frame of mind.”
King, criticizing Obama’s healthcare law, suggested that doctors’ practice of asking about guns could ultimately help the government surveil citizens.
“What they’re doing is compiling a record that, one day, the Obama administration or a succeeding administration could tap into,” King said. “Who is getting those records? They will be in ObamaCare’s database file. That’s part of that.”
“Are they going to start asking if [patients] are Republicans or Democrats?” said Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), another member of the Judiciary Committee. “Asking questions that are none of the pediatricians’ business is out of bounds.”
“It’s not their business,” said Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), a member of the House Judiciary Committee. “It’s like asking, ‘Do people pray in your home? Do they voice opinions contrary to the [Obama] administration?'”
Contrary to many of their colleagues, some GOP lawmakers who practice medicine sympathized with that view this week.
“Our pediatricians do a fabulous job,” said Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.), an OBGYN with an “A” rating from the NRA. “In the spirit of knowing that maybe there were guns in the home, to advise a parent or a legal guardian about gun safety, I think I understand.”
“If I’m a pediatrician, I want to make sure the kids I take care of are safe,” said Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R-Tenn.), a physician. “So having a discussion about all types of things … I don’t have a problem with it.”

The Rulz
The most important rule around here is…
Be kind to each other… or else.
Seriously though, if you don’t want it said to you, then don’t say it to someone else. Respect is an important thing. If you feel the need to not be respectful, then step away and take a breather. Political debate can be both spirited and respectful.

Diary of a Dog Walker: Sorrow to Joy
To tell you that I look forward to going to work everyday would be an understatement, that this fifty eight year old beat the odds and found work that I love in this economic environment so hostile to anyone older than fifty..let’s just say I’m darn lucky. Being unemployed for two years I was so desperate I would have taken almost anything just to earn a paycheck again, but I stumbled into something special.
More about that in the next diary.
There are numerous benefits attached to this job, some more obvious than others. As an animal lover I’m surrounded, as an outdoor verse cubicle person I’m in my element, all of them. I’m doggedly independant and have been mostly self employed my entire life: I check in, collect keys and I spend the entire day without supervision or anyone looking over my shoulder. I will sometimes walk up to 10-12 miles a day, add to that climbing stairs and riding my bikes during the warm months, I’m very fit and have to purposely eat to maintain weight.
The not so obvious benefit is my exposure to so many dog breeds I was unfamiliar with. In an odd sense it’s akin to a free long term test drive, seeing a dog everyday I pick up quirks and traits that are inherant in certain breeds, invaluable information that a potential dog owner needs to know before choosing a new pet.
My wife, Ms. O and I had a dog when I began working here and after eight months I had no idea this benefit would be so important so soon, but it was. Our 14 year old Black Lab/ Great Dane mix Lexie was suddenly diagnosed with inoperable cancer so we had no choice but to let her go.

Paranoia in the Trenches: Republicans Attack Pediatricians On Gun Questions
The NRA Enemy List has now been scrubbed but it included many medical organizations
‘If you’re in a major medical community, chances are you made the list. The American Medical Association, American Nurses Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Association for Surgery of Trauma, Congress of Neurological Surgeons are included.’
Two Freshman Senators and a Contrast of Choices
‘There are district attorneys and United States attorneys out there every day squeezing ordinary citizens on sometimes very thin grounds and taking them to trial in order to make an example, as they put it. I’m really concerned that ‘too big to fail’ has become ‘too big for trial,’
‘We do not know, for example, if he received compensation for giving paid speeches at extreme or radical groups. It is at a minimum relevant to know if that $200,000 that he deposited in his bank account came directly from Saudi Arabia, came directly from North Korea.’

The only reasonable inference was there was something in there that they did not want to make public.”
It’s clear that Cruz has business of his own to conduct, the cynical single minded business of making a name for himself while smearing the honorable reputation of a wounded and decorated war veteran and fellow Republican with a speculative, McCarthyesque smear that raised a more than a few eyebrows. Even John McCain, who these days rarely sees the forest through his bitter trees, felt compelled to draw the line and rebuke Cruz.

Sunday GIForama: Nature
from ehow
‘The Graphics Interchange Format (or GIF for short) has long been one of the most popular image formats among computer users and programmers.
The main types of GIF images are 87a and 89a. 87a is a simpler type of image and has support for only one stationary picture. 89a however, supports multiple images, which can be compressed into a single GIF file. These images then can be strung together to create a crude “slideshow” animation, called an animated GIF or anigif.
The quality of GIF images has greatly improved as the format has evolved. While the initial GIF files only had support for 256 colors, advanced blending and transparency techniques have made it so that more colors can be created.’
