Open Thread: Shutdown, Schmutdown

As a Federal employee, I was paying pretty close attention to the looming shutdown of the Federal government. Don’t get me wrong, I love free time as much as the next lazy ‘gubmint Delta Bravo‘, but my family can’t really afford to go without my meager paycheck, dig?

Fortunately for me (for others not so much), an 11th hour deal was struck to ensure that I have the ability to continue to provide for my kiddies — at least for the time being. Was the deal a bad one?

Libyan Open Thread: Here There Be Monsters

Well, one at least. Here’s some of what the whackadoodle had to say yesterday:

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, whose authority is teetering amid a popular uprising, said in an interview with a French newspaper on Sunday that an Islamic holy war would engulf the Mediterranean if the insurrection in Libya succeeded and that “we will go back to the time of Red Beard, of pirates, of Ottomans imposing ransoms on boats.”

Of course, this isn’t particularly surprising from an omnicidal dictator who fancies himself a Flemingesque mastermind. Red Beard? This from an asshat who takes fashion advice from Capt. Crunch.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone, and a hearty blessing to you and your family this day. We have many things to give thanks for today- go share them with your family and friends.

In the meantime, I wanted to share a short prayer with you:

Almighty God, we thank you for our good fortune with full and grateful hearts. We thank you for our family and friends; we thank you for this community we’ve built and share. We ask your blessing this day, and to watch over us, especially in these troubling times; to keep us, our friends, our family, our country on the path to righteousness; for those suffering with medical bills and health care concerns; for those unemployed and suffering hard times; for our men and women overseas who can’t share this day with their families; for President Obama and our political leaders, to help keep their judgment clear and sound, to lead us through the specter of darkness facing our great nation. In your name we pray; Amen.

Thanks for our community, guys. Even from those of us not around as much as we used to be, trust me- it means a lot. God Bless, and have a great day.

Fall 2010 Television Shows Open Thread

While watching television has never been high on my to-do list, I have found a couple of new shows I like. The main one is Detroit 1-8-7. It is a gritty cop show that follows the day-to-day activities of a top Detroit Homicide unit. To-date, four of the scheduled twelve episodes have aired. Critical reception has been mixed. I find it compelling enough to record each week.

The main complaint from the critics is that the show brings nothing new to the genre. While I would agree with that assessment somewhat, I don’t think it is entirely accurate. Few shows have managed to capture the reality of the streets of a city like Detroit. Memphis Beat certainly missed the mark. I’ve lived in the Memphis area and worked in Memphis and the show was a big disappointment. The less said about the realism of Miami Vice, the better. NYPD Blue had a similar gritty realism. However, it is difficult, and perhaps unfair, to compare a new show to arguably the best cop show of all time.
